‘Tis the season to be fire safe

Your home

One of the most magical times of the year is almost upon us and the decorations are being dusted off. But it’s also a dangerous time of year for house fires. So, let’s learn to deck the halls carefully and make sure we all have a safe and happy holiday.

Fire-safe Christmas

Many of the things we tend to enjoy over the festive period - such as fairy lights, candles, Christmas trees and decorations - can be fire hazards if we don’t take proper care. Fortunately, you can follow these 6 simple tips to keep your family safe.

1. Fire up your escape plan

Take a moment to review your fire escape plan, just in case you have an emergency during the festive period. Do you know where your nearest exits are? Where should you assemble once you get outside? Does everyone in your household know what to do?

2. Careful with your Christmas tree

It’s fun to put our Christmas trees up, but make sure they’re not placed near fireplaces and candles. If you have a real tree, make sure it’s well-watered daily, as a dry tree is far more likely to catch fire.

3. Defend your decorations

Keep your decorations and cards away from fires and other heat sources such as light fittings. They could easily catch fire and make great kindling!

4. Don’t forget those fairy lights

Fairy lights look so pretty this time of year but make sure you switch them off and unplug them if you leave your home and before you go to bed. They’re surprisingly good at causing house fires.

5. Cautious in your kitchen

Give yourself enough time to prepare and cook a celebration dinner to avoid accidents that come from rushing. And wipe up any flammable spills such as cooking oil quickly - most home fires begin in the kitchen.

6. Police your plug sockets

It’s always exciting to receive a new gift, but don’t overloaded plug sockets with cables in a rush to connect new gadgets and appliances, and always read the instructions first. No one wants to damage their brand-new toy!

But most importantly…

Have a safe and happy holiday! We wish you and your loved ones a joyful festive season and happy new year. Find out how to contact us over the holiday period.
